The Saudi Arabia city of Taif, some 170 kilometres east of Jeddah, is located in the Mecca Province of the country and has a population of 1.2 million people. It boasts a rich history and in the 6th century was run by the Banu Thaqif tribe. Today its main industry is agriculture, exporting grapes, figs, pomegranates and honey, but it is also the place where Saudi Arabians escape the intense heat in the summer months. It has its own King Khalid racecourse, a left handed 8 furlong dirt track on the outskirts of the city. The principal race is the Um Elqura Universal Cup over 2400 metres.
